How Weather Affects Car Dents

Weather can be unpredictable, and it often has a direct impact on our vehicles. As specialists in paintless dent removal (PDR), we frequently see how various weather conditions contribute to car dents. Understanding these effects can help you better protect your vehicle and know when to seek professional help. Here’s a guide on how weather affects car dents.

Hailstorms

Hailstorms are notorious for causing significant damage to vehicles. Hailstones can vary in size, from small pebbles to golf balls, and even larger. When these ice chunks plummet from the sky, they can create numerous dents across your car’s surface. The severity of the damage depends on the size and velocity of the hailstones, but even smaller hail can leave noticeable marks. If a hailstorm or storm is forecast, try to park your car under a shelter.

Snow and Ice

While a blanket of snow may look lovely, it can hide dangers for your car. Accumulated snow can lead to dents in a few ways:

The sheer weight of heavy snowfall can cause dents, especially on car roofs and bonnets. Furthermore, as snow melts and refreezes, it can form hard ice patches. Falling ice chunks from trees or roofs can leave significant dents. Regularly clear snow off your car, especially from the roof, to prevent heavy accumulation. Avoid parking under trees or structures where ice might form and fall.

Strong Winds

Strong winds can turn ordinary objects into damaging projectiles. Debris such as branches, stones, and even bigger objects can be lifted by gusts of wind and hurled against your car, leaving behind dents and scratches. Park your car away from large trees, construction sites, or anywhere loose debris could be picked up by the wind. Using car covers can also provide an extra layer of protection.

As well as this, supermarket trolleys that have been left unattended can bash against car paintwork. This sort of thing is really frustrating and careless. So when you park in supermarket carparks then glance around to see if any have been left near parking spaces!

Extreme Temperatures

Both extreme heat and cold can indirectly lead to dents. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can weaken your car’s paint and metal, making it more susceptible to dents from minor impacts. Whenever possible, park your car in a garage or shaded area during hot weather and avoid sudden temperature changes that can stress the car’s metal. Extreme cold on the other hand can make the car’s metal more brittle, increasing the likelihood of dents and cracks upon impact. During cold weather, try to keep your car in a garage to help shield it from the conditions.

Rainstorms and Flooding

Heavy rainstorms can lead to flooding, which poses risks beyond just water damage. Floating debris can collide with your car, causing dents and other damage. Additionally, the force of water itself, especially if fast-moving, can dent panels and other surfaces. Avoid driving through flooded areas and park your car on higher ground during heavy rainfalls to prevent damage from floating debris and strong water currents.

Careless People!

Of course we have to mention this as it is one of the top ways to get your car dented. Bad weather always brings out the worst in people. Their vision isnt always so great when it is raining. Windscreens can steam up making it sometimes unclear where they are going, especially when manouvreing around a carpark.

The wind assists in swinging car doors open before they have a chance to grab them, sometimes resulting in hitting someone elses car.

And people rushing in the rain can cause problems as well.
