Testing Vehicle Paint Before Repair

Before starting any Paintless Dent Repair, Dent Medic Pdr will check the vehicles paint thickness, condition and for previous paint repairs. We carry this out with an electronic paint thickness gauge, which gives a measurement of the thickness between the vehicles metal and the device. Testing vehicle paint before the repair is very critical as this can help us to decide the best repair method for your vehicle.

Why do we measure your vehicle’s paint?

The results of the paint testing will tell us the history of your vehicle’s paint. The thickness result will tell us whether the paint is original or has previously been repainted.

The paint tester will also tell us whether your vehicle has its original factory zinc coating; which will have been applied in the factory before the paint finish. If our test does not detect the zinc coating, we know that this could have been sanded off the metal in a previous paint repair. By doing this we can choose the best repair method for your vehicle.

Choosing the correct repair method for your vehicles paint condition is very important. A general rule of thumb is that a vehicle that has had previous paint repairs generally has weaker paint. This can affect our repair as we would not want to use GPR (glue pull repair) on weak paint as it could risk damaging the paint. In these circumstances we would choose to use Paintless Dent Removal methods and repair the damage from the underside of the panel.

After we have finished testing your vehicle’s paint condition, we also have the ability to create a test report to send you for future reference.
