How Paintless Dent Removal Works

Ever wondered how PDR works? In this article we will take a dive into how it works and the process behind PDR.

What is Paintless Dent Removal (PDR) ?

Paintless Dent Removal (PDR), is a method of repairing minor dents in a car’s bodywork by reshaping the panel back to its original manufactures condition. This means there is no need to fill or paint over the damage making it a complete paintless repair. During the PDR process, specialist tools are used to push and massage the damaged area from behind the panel. As a result, the dented metal is pushed out to restore its original shape without needing paint. This repairs the bodywork back to original condition while maintaining the manufacturer’s paintwork finish.

How PDR Works

How PDR Works

The objective of PDR is to return a cars metal bodywork back to its initial state before damage. To know the exact position of the damage and to tell the technician when the repair is complete, specialist fluorescent or LED lighting is used. This tells the technician two main factors. Firstly what exactly is happening with the panel as each individual movement happens. The lighting also shows when the panel is back to its original factory condition. By using this lighting we can make sure we get a perfect repair.

To complete a paintless dent repair the technician must find access to the back of the dented panel. This can include removing parts from your vehicle such as tail lights or trim pieces. Once access to the dent has been located the technician will use a series of metal rods to meticulously push the dent from the underside watching the lighting for each movement. If access to the underside of the panel is not possible the option to use GPR (glue pull repair) may be better. You can read more about glue pull repairs here.

When metal is dented the metal not only goes in, but also spreads away from the centre of the dent. To address this and return the metal to its correct form you will see technicians using small hammers and plastic punches on the face of your vehicle. Although seeing someone tapping the outside of your vehicle with hammers might make you anxious. We can reassure you, these hammers and punches are specifically designed to be used and will not damage your vehicles paint.

Benefits of Using PDR

  1. Cost-effective: Compared to traditional dent repair methods that require repainting, PDR is significantly more affordable. By eliminating the need for repainting, you can save on costly materials and labor expenses.
  2. Time-efficient: With our mobile PDR service available in Sussex, you can enjoy the convenience of having your dents repaired at your home or workplace. This eliminates the hassle of dropping off your car at a body shop and waiting for days to get it back.
  3. Preserves the original finish: PDR techniques allow for precise dent repair without disturbing the original paint. This ensures that your car’s resale value remains intact, as there are no visible signs of repair or color mismatches.
  4. Environmentally friendly: Since PDR doesn’t involve using paint or harmful chemicals, it is an eco-friendly alternative to conventional dent repair methods. It reduces the generation of hazardous waste and contributes to a greener environment.
